Modernization of locomotives
Involves comprehensive conversions to make older vehicles fit for the future by installing new diesel, electric or hybrid drives, state-of-the-art control systems, safety technology (e.g. ETCS) and comfort features such as air conditioning to make them more powerful, efficient and sustainable and extend their service life by 20-25 years. This saves costs compared to new construction and enables a gradual transition to modern technologies.
Types of modernization:

Drive technology:
Conversion from diesel to hybrid (diesel-electric with batteries) or fully electric, installation of modern diesel engines, motorization.

Control & safety:
Retrofitting of train control systems (ETCS), radio remote controls, new braking systems

Passenger comfort (for passenger transport):
New driver’s cabs, air conditioning, ergonomic workstations, LED lighting, new paintwork.

Electronics:
Renewal of all electrical systems and software.

Additional systems:
Installation of wheel flange lubrication systems, soot particle filters, preheaters.
